I was going to start with YOU have a problem, but I just tried to install JA6 in a second system and now it's WE have a problem. About same setup, XP, 1.4.2_02. During install, JA sees the Java VM folder and proceeds "normally." On going to Start>JAlbum I then get the pop up saying a valid VM could not be found and I should try "reinstalling" Java VM. I (tried to) installed JA6 in separate folder so 5.2 is still there and that runs fine. Also tried downloading JA6 again from the second US site. Same problem. My other XP system with no problem is running Java 1.5. Maybe it's time for 1.5.
UPDATE: for what it's worth, I had two java versions: j2re1.4.1_02 and j2re1.4.2_02 in my java folder. JA6 only reported the later one. I also went to www.java.com and did a "verify" version. Using IE it said I had the 1.4.2_02 version while using Firefox, I supposedly had 1.1.4 ? In any event I "upgraded" to Java Version 5 Update 5 (which goes painlessly using IE, but seemingly involves a bit more with FFx). I now have a third java version in the java folder: jre1.5.0_05 which both IE and FFx now verify.
I installed JA6 again and this time it saw 1.4.2_02 and 1.5.0_05 (which was preselected). Bottom line: JA6 started right up. Solved the problem, but didn't answer the question of what went wrong to start with.
If you have a dial-up connection though and this install issue, version 5 looks like a 50+MB (unpacked!) download. (David is corrrect (as usual)-the actual download is around 16MB)
